BLACK UNITY COLLECTION: Since 2021, Apple has released a special edition watch band and watch face to honor Black History Month. Guided by the principles of truth, power, and solidarity, the Black Unity Collection is designed by Black creatives and allies at Apple for anyone committed to ending systemic racism and building a more equitable world. Each year, the collection pays homage to the vibrancy of the Black community, and celebrates the colors of the Pan-African flag: red for the blood that unites the African Diaspora, black for the people it represents, and green for the natural wealth of the Motherland. In the aftermath of the social justice movement in the United States, I volunteered to join this team of designers from across Apple. As the team storyteller, I provide the cultural narrative for our design concepts and drive the messaging strategy with partners in product marketing, packaging, PR, philanthropy, services and retail activations. Through Apple’s Racial Equity Initiative, the Black Unity Collection supports donations to expand opportunities for Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and Indigenous communities around the world.
